Ghost Island?

Today I was working on a research topic to see what types of lane merging geometric designs are common, whether it is right lane merging into left lane or the other way around and what those trap lanes are and how they work, etc. I posted the question on our workplace forum and someone from UK responded with a link to their Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (Accessed 04/03/2019). Skimming through this document, I came across the term 'ghost island' merge and had no idea what that is. I did a google search on this and the above is a screenshot of what I found. That cracked me up. I had to write about it. This could be riddle on its own! Find the relationship in these photos!
